I'm Back

The new year brings all kinds of things with it. Everyone has a new resolution from losing weight to paying off debts and making other big life changes. This blog used to be an outlet for me when I wanted to talk about the thing I love most, Music. The point is this isn't meant to be a resolutionary (not a real word) blog, its meant to be what it was originally intended to be, a music blog from my mouth/hands to you ears/eyes.

Now we've established this isn't some" I have this grandiose idea that I'm going to start blogging in the new year and I want everyone to read my thoughts about things I have no expertise in." so please don't read it that way. This is a, "Hey I like music and want to talk about my thoughts and feels about it," blog.  Also I'am not an English major and I don't know that I want to spend much time making everything in this blog pristine.

With all of those things being said read this blog with my tone in mind and comment a shit ton. I want to know other opinions and critics of my blog and the music I listen to which is a wide variety...I hope. Cheers see you in the music room.

Wasting Light

If you are not familiar with them (the Foo Fighters), you should be. They have been here since the early 90s forming from other already heavily popular groups. They released their first album in 95, and haven’t looked back. Lead singer Dave Grohl is known for his membership in the band Nirvana where he was drummer with lead singer and good friend Kurt Cobain. Dave has also worked with Nine Inch Nails, Tenacious S and a lot of other well known and lesser known acts.

The Foo Fighters set records with their second Studio album, The Colour and The Shape. Hitting high on the Charts with, Everlong, My Hero and Monkey Wrench. Their last album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, released in 2007 echoed of the days when heavy hitting post-grunge ruled the airwaves. The album was most know for the track, Long Road to Ruin.

Even though the listening style of todays world has changed the band still has a huge following, those grunge kids had to grow up right? Foo Fighters newest release, Wasting Time. Has hit number one on the Austrian album chart, Canadian album chart and U.S. Billboard just to name a few. The record also went platinum in the AU.

Foo isn’t a band to fuck with and neither is there seventh studio album, that being said the band is still very humbling. In an interview with The Music Network, lead singer Dave talks about recoding this album in his garage, he said “ There’s poetry in being the band that can sell out Wembly but also make a record in a garage.” Listening to the album you defiantly don’t hear a garage band, you hear music greats making history and playing for the soul to an audience who can’t stop listening and is hungry for more. Wasting Light was released April 2011, available now.

Weather Vanes

I love music, all music and all for very different reasons. Naturally I love finding and experiencing new music and on April 16th, a year after the albums release, that is exactly what I did. Who did I stumble upon you ask, Freelance Whales.

I first watched the music video Generator First Floor, and saw they played the banjo. I thought to myself, they want to be Mumford and Sons, and immediately turned off...for a second. As the song play I felt inspired, lifted and refreshed. This was not about wanting to be anyone or anything else, they were doing what they loved and that was making music.

The mix of electronic sounds, percussion instruments as well as string instruments was candy for my ears. Their sound is a mix of blue grass, indie, and electronic. If you have listed to Claudio Sanchez's Prize Fighter Inferno, they are instrumental cousins. Lyricly and vocally they sound indie with the stories of cute loves and summer days. A familiar vocal talent might be Plain white tees. This music mix sounds like it wouldn't go down very easy, but it works and it works well. This may not have been the album of the year but it was worthy of a new artist award.

The King of Limbs

It’s a Saturday night and what is happening? I’m sitting at home thinking about what to cook for lunch and dinner tomorrow, welcome to my life of working at 6am on weekends. My bed time is, oh lets see 3 hours away. What better way to past the time than write a review of a new release. Beer in my hand, computer in my lap get ready for my mostly valid opinion.

Radiohead recently released their 8th studio album, “ The King of Limbs”. I’m a fan of Radiohead, but I hadn’t heard about this album until a month after its release. What kind of fan am I, right? Not a crazy one. Ha. Any way I thought to myself I better take a listen because I could be missing out on something great. I was right but it took me 3 good listens to understand. You know those moments when you are listening to an artist and ask yourself , am I not smart enough to get this or is this just crazy. I call that a gaga moment and I had one the first and second time I listened to The King of Limbs.

I didn’t know if I was listening to the right album or not but if you know Radiohead you know this is how things are for us less experienced Headers. On my 3rd listed I realized this is genius, the sounds, they lyrics, the feeling and emotion put into it was pure human genius. Like I said I was already a fan and had listened to Raidohead before but this album feels different. There is a bit less singing and a bit more electronic instrumental sounds. From Pablo Honey to this album Raidohead has influenced and reacted to a generation.

I cant predict the future but I don’t see them slowing down or going anywhere. As this album picks up steam and more people experience the band their following will grow in number. This isn’t an album to be taken lightly, listen with full intent and you will see what I mean.

Downfall of the Album

Today, while reading an article on N.P.R. online, I wondered to myself, “why have people stopped listening to full albums?” Now don’t get me wrong not everyone has stopped listening to full albums, but I thinks its safe to say if your walking down the street and ask someone what they are listening to on their mp3 player or iPod, they would say that new “whoever” song. Not that new “whoever” album. I would also make a guess that if you take a look at what’s on that same mp3 player or iPod you would see that the person you stopped only has a few popular songs from different artists, not full albums from each artist they like.

To get into the thick of it I just want to blame Apple. If you know me you know I hate Apple, and yes its true, I cant hold them completely responsible but I will (eye roll). The way I see it is like this. In 1998 whether you were a teen, a pre- teen or an adult, if you liked a song you heard on the radio you went to the store and bought the whole CD. You had the option of buying a single, but really it was a waste of 5 bucks for a radio edit, extended edit and the artist inspiring instrumental. Anytime before that you would do the same thing, with tapes, 8 tracks and records, you purchased the whole audio composition. When you did this your had discovery at you fingertips, or more like your ear drums. You would here the next big single and not even know it. It was so exciting though, because when you heard that next single on the radio you would say, “ I love this song its so great, I'm so glad its on the radio”, and what did you do, turn it up. Granted some songs probably got old and you would change the station but for the most part you loved it.

In October 2001 Apple released the first iPod with that came itunes. Now I'm not sure when the downloading revolution started, when I say that I'm including downloading illegally. I know web sites and programs like Napster, Kazza and Limewire existed at that time as well, but Apple is the one (angry fist shake). This is where the decline of the album and the album experience began.

Lets move forward to a generation that has had technology at their finger tips since they were born. ipods, Facebook, cell phones, Tivo, Youtube, all that stuff. I know it’s a different generation as is every generation to the next. I don’t know however, if they have had or will have the same experience with music (that is so very necessary) that past generations had the opportunity to immures themselves in. The reason I feel like its so important could steam from the fact that I was raised on music. As a young adult music in my life is the air I breath and one of the most important and influential things in my life. That being said, I know for a fact that music can, has and will influence everyone it touches. Take for example Baby boomers, they had Woodstock, The Beatles, Motown and the rise of the almighty Rolling Stone. Going back even further, to Muddy Watters, Evils Presley and Rockn’roll in its infant years. Music has had its hand in creating an outlet for young people since forever.

The excitement of the next album coming out has been lost. Artist today have so much to fight for because they get that one popular radio song but that’s all they are known for. Young people today don’t know what album which song is on, they just know after 2 years its old school. We need to get back to wanting to have the full discography of one artist and listening to every word written and said. New generations need to have that same great experience most of us still remember having, so when you go to a concert you can sing along to every song, not just the popular ones. Know the artist and love them for everything they produce, not just what the radio or Apples most downloaded songs tells you is good.

As I sit here on my couch writing about the thing I think is so important to life on our little planet I hope everyone who reads this gets the real message. I'm not actually trying to blame Apple for anything, even though I think they are a cult company, they are not to blame. We are. I don’t have a fix to the worlds huge problems and don’t really want to preach, well just kidding maybe I kind of do want to preach about music related things. We should all find new artists, even if it starts at the radios top 40 list. Go out and the 80 of you who read this, listen, buy or download a whole album. Not something old that you already know and are familiar with, but discover a new artist and share them with your friends and the world.

Hope everyone likes my little rant and opinion, if you don’t then comment on it and tell me what you think. A good discussion about anything to do with music is always good.

P.S. Just so everyone knows and you can judge if you want. I just downloaded and am currently listening to 3doors down and The Used full discographies.
